Ancient Egyptian cartonnage funerary mask

Reading Museum opened to the public in 1883 and the collections acquired in its early days were intended to educate visitors about other civilisations and cultures as well as to interpret the local area. The Bland Collection which formed the kernel of the early galleries contained Ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian objects and subsequent donors added to these.

The Ancient Greek pottery came primarily from collectors who chose the items for their artistic quality, whilst the Ancient Egyptian objects largely derived from archaeological excavations carried out on sites by the Egypt Exploration Society and the British School of Archaeology in Egypt.
