Porcelain tray depicting Reading Abbey Gateway in 1759

The Story of Reading Gallery at Reading Museum explores our town's long history from its origins in the 6th century right up to the present day. The first part of the gallery highlights the town’s history before Reading Abbey was established by King Henry I in 1121, and then focuses on the history of the abbey leading up to its closure in 1539. Displays explore life after the abbey and the impact of the Civil War. The second part of the gallery is where you can discover more about Reading's modern history.
