Huntley & Palmers Tin - Army Number 9
about 1914
A small display tin containing No.9 army biscuits which were given out as rations during the First World War.
Shortly after war broke out in 1914 Huntley & Palmers began making army biscuits for the forces. Despite starting the war with low stock levels, Huntley & Palmers managed to honour its commitments to the government until 1917 when it halted its supply of army biscuits in an attempt to rescue its export business. These 'No. 9' army biscuits were made by Huntley & Palmers during World War I. Why such biscuits were put in a display tin, which were either used by commercial travellers or as part of a shop display, is unclear.
