Rev. E.O. Gittens the new priest at Holy Trinity Church, Oxford Road, Reading in the church vaults.

Various locations were brought into use as air raid shelters during September 1939. Vaults under Holy Trinity Church, Oxford Road, Reading provided ready made air raid shelters for several hundred people. 150 years before, these had been chalk pits from which vaults were created. Next door to the church, under a garage there was a similar shelter.

This photograph appeared in the Berkshire Chronicle on 29 September 1939.
