A Reading allotment, photographed around the time of the launch of the 'Dig for Victory' campaign.

Reading's 'Dig for Victory' campaign was launched in a Berkshire Chronicle headline of 13 October 1939. Inside, an article explained how the Borough of Reading had accepted the services of Mr A.J.Cobb, F.R.H.S., F.I.L.A., recently retired from the position of senior lecturer in horticulture at the University of Reading. The article emphasised the need to grow more food from allotments and gardens, explaining the steps that were being taken to make more allotments available and the advice and assistance that Mr Cobb would provide to residents of the borough.

This photograph was taken for the Berkshire Chronicle but was not published.
