Army No.4 biscuit

This Huntley & Palmers No.4 army biscuit was not to the taste of the disgruntled soldier who sent it home during the First World War. He wrote on the attached label, 'Have gone on hunger strike, reason attached, mind your toes' 25.4.16

Shortly after war broke out in 1914 Huntley & Palmers began making army biscuits for the forces. Despite starting the war with low stock levels, Huntley & Palmers managed to honour its commitments to the government until 1917 when it halted its supply of army biscuits in an attempt to rescue its export business.
