Army biscuit
Photograph - probably 1916

Army biscuit
A No.4 army biscuit framing an image of General Kitchener, war minister during World War I until his death at sea in 1916.
The War Office gave Huntley & Palmers substantial orders for army biscuits as soon as war broke out. The company also packaged 250,000 tons of basic rations, consisting of tea, sugar and Oxo cubes into tins made by Huntley Boorne & Stevens. The war also created a drain on labour as men responded to Kitchener's campaign for volunteers to join up. This meant that the company was employing more women than ever by the end of the War.
