This is a Huntley & Palmers First World War Army Biscuit with a heart-shaped cut-out portrait photograph of soldier Rifleman George Mansfield mounted inside a wooden box with glass cover.
Private Mansfield served with the 60th Battalion (London Division) of the 2/21st London Regiment in Palestine and on the Western Front. He made this photo frame from a No 4 H&P Army Biscuit and placed it in a box fashioned from an old cigar box. It was then sent home as a gift to his mother. George Mansfield survived the war and worked in the cloth trade. This is one of many First World War Army Biscuits that were put to uses other than that for which they were intended!
