The shield which was erected under the existing arch to support the original structure.

The first stages of the construction of the Great Western Railway bridge over Oxford Road, near Reading West Station. Note the electric tram in the background, a sign on the bridge warned top deck passengers to 'Keep your seats' due to the dangerously low head clearance before the bridge was rebuilt.

This photograph was published in the Berkshire Chronicle on 24 June 1938.
