Edward Jackson was Mayor of Reading from 1905 to 1907 and founder of Jacksons department store in 1875. He was born at Sherfield on Loddon, Hampshire in 1849 and died at Reading in 1928. The family business traded from the 'Jacksons Corner' store on King's Road in Reading until its closure in December 2013.

Walton Adams (1842 – 1934) moved to Reading from Southampton with his young family in 1881 and he established a new photographic studio in Blagrave Street. His son Marcus and grandson Gilbert were also talented professional photographers.
