Incense burner from Iran

This metal incense burner is from Iran. It is cut-out with decorative geometric and floral motifs, possibly influenced by Islamic design as Islam is the predominant religion of Iran.

In Islam the depiction of living beings, and particularly prophets or Allah, is prohibited and regarded as an extension of idolatry. Because of this, much Islamic art utilises elaborate arabic script and geometric and floral patterns.
