This cross-section of a tree branch is thought to be from Israel. It has a small inscription in Hebrew to one side which reads ‘Har Hazeitim’ or ‘Mount of Olives’. The purpose of the object is not known, though it is probably a souvenir or tourist item.
The Mount of Olives is a ridge of mountains close to Jerusalem’s Old City in Israel and is a culturally significant site for a number of world religions. A large ancient Jewish cemetery on the site houses hundreds of thousands of graves, and in Christianity key events in the life of Jesus are said to have taken place there, including his ascension to heaven.
