This book was written by Dr Joseph Stevens (1818-1899), Reading Museum's first curator. It was published the year before the museum opened in 1883 and was printed at the neighbouring Blagrave Street Steam Printing Works.

Dr Stevens was a medical doctor by profession and a geologist and antiquarian in his spare time. When he retired from medicine he moved from St Mary Bourne, Hampshire, to Reading. He spent a very busy retirement building up Reading Museum, which he did as the honorary or unpaid curator from 1884 to 1897. Stevens found many archaeological sites and objects around Reading. He retired as curator at the age of 79, and died shortly afterwards in 1899.
