Rosary beads
Seedpods - Before 1927
These rosary beads made from seedpods was donated to the Museum in 1927. They are used to count each prayer that is said as part of the Rosary. A Rosary is a form of prayer and is an element of Roman Catholic worship and the veneration of the Virgin Mary.
The seedpods that form this rosary are shaped like arrow-heads. At the bottom of the chain, four seedpods have been positioned pointing inwards, to give the impression of a Maltese cross. This style of cross design dates back to the era of the Crusades and is most famously associated with the Knights Hospitaller, who were based at Malta.
