Prince Philip and Mr Patrick Hamilton arriving at Wantage Hall.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip was the Guest of Honour at a dinner given by the Students' Union of Reading University at Wantage Hall. The Duke arrived at 7:15pm in his black Lagonda convertible and was greeted by Mr Patrick Hamilton, the President of the Students' Union.

The dinner was attended by 111 people of which 98 were students, representing all Halls of Residence, year groups and degree subjects. Following dinner, the party retired to the junior common room and library where the Duke chatted informally to the other dinner guests. The Duke said of students after the event, "it is interesting to see the nonconformity of students and their flouting of authority. It is sad that they are not able to continue this in later life. Students are not really different from other people, it is only that they are in different circumstances".

This photograph was published in the Berkshire Chronicle on 28 November 1958.
