Around 12,500 unaccompanied schoolchildren were evacuated to Reading at the beginning of September 1939. Some evacuees arrived at Reading Southern railway station. From here they were taken to schools and transferred to the families they would be staying with.

This photograph was published in the Berkshire Chronicle on 8 September 1939.
