Turkish label at the centre of copyright dispute

Label which was the centre of a copyright and trade mark dispute between Huntley & Palmers and a Turkish biscuit makers, H.C. Jucknavorian and Sons, Constantinople.

In 1909 the design of this label for Turkish biscuits was drawn to the attention of Huntley & Palmers. Due to the similarities between this label and their factory tin label, Huntley & Palmers immediately requested that the Turkish company stopped using this design and that all copies of it should be destroyed. Over three years later, in September 1912, a letter was written to Huntley & Palmers by a Mr G. Hardingham confirming that H.C. Jucknavorian had signed a petition 'for the cancelment of the trademark' registered by him at the Ministry of Commerce. In addition, all copies of the infringing trademark had been destroyed as had the lithographic stones from which the trademarks were printed. This label was enclosed within that letter. There was a similar case in 1894 when Huntley & Palmers threatened legal action against Staffordshire company of Burgess & Leigh, who had copied the design of a Huntley & Palmers 'Indian' tin for a teapot.
